The Institutes’ staff works out an individual program for every child kid. Applied methods are rather simple but, in any case, you should be trained prior to their application and further you should use these methods under the Institutes control. That’s why we’ll give only general idea about our program.

1. The most important point for program execution

At the lectures Janet Doman noticed that according to the parents’ words the most important thing for achieving success in program, developed for a certain kid, is “consistency”. It means that you should follow the program regularly – on daily basis. We completely agree with Janet but after 6 months of daily execution of the Institutes’ program the most important thing for us is to get enough sleep :) .

“Good teachers need a good rest. Try to devote more time to your sleep. Mothers, especially mothers of small children, don’t sleep as much as they need. Calculate the time of your sleep and add at least one hour”.

Glenn Doman, Janet Doman «How To Teach Your Baby To Read»

We try to follow this rule by the whole family (but we rarely are successful in this :) .

2. Training Schedule

Approximate schedule of our program:

06:30 – getting up

7:00 – 8:00 – Patterning. Crawling on the floor (as far as Kate is able to do it). We also do masking, tactile stimulation, manual exercises: lifting on mother’s fingers into seating position.

9:00 – 10:00 – breakfast

10:00 – 12:00 – Kate and her mother sleep before their new achievements.

12:00 – 13:00 – lunch

13:00 – 16:00 – Kate with mom continue crawling, making masks, rubbing Kate with brushes and sponges, lifting on mom fingers. Girls also fulfill the intellectual program (reading).

16:00 – 17:00 – afternoon snack

17:00 – 18:00 – Mom and Kate finish reading program, making masks, lifting on fingers, tactile stimulation.

18:00 – 20:00 – Kate has a nap before the evening patterning.

20:00 – 21:30 – patterning. Kate and mom crawl the last meters to reach current goals, make last masks and lift on fingers.

22 – Dinner, preparation to sleep.

Our program is not very intense, in comparison with the programs of other kids, but even this simple program is difficult to remember. That’s why every day we print out the check lists and stick them to the folder. In such a way we keep a peculiar diary of our exercises.

3. Our achievements

3.1 After our first trip

After our first trip to the Institutes we moved from Moscow region to Tobolsk, therefore, we started to fulfill the program on a regular basis only in August 2011. Our progress after 4 months was more than modest one.
1. At the end of October we completely stopped to use an inclined floor and started crawling only on the flat floor. However, Kate is crawling only on her elbows (she pulls herself by hands but legs rest straight and she does not involve them into the moving process);
2. Kate learnt to close her mouth, and drooling is decreased.
3. The daughter “found” her teeth and during 2 weeks she was grinding the teeth to irritate her mom. It was such a funny game for her.
4. Kate started to play the ape and to grimace in front of the mirror;
5. She started to pronounce some new sounds and to coo;
6. She got to like hand-made books very much;
7. She learnt to play cunning.

To tell the truth, we were not very much impressed by the results. And when in December 2011 we arrived for the revisit to the Institutes we were the last among other kids (based on the achieved results). On the other hand, Kate’s main problem is physical activity. And within 3 months we managed not to use inclined floor and started crawling around our apartment. For this reason, in spite of our opinion, in the Institutes we got “Excellent” for performing the program “Aspirant” and were transferred to the “Intensive” program. Of course, we’ll try to achieve more significant results.

4. Program elements

4.1. Flat floor

One of the main program requirements is that a child must spend most of the time lying on his belly on the floor. It gives him more possibilities for moving.

4.2. Respiratory program

One of the main program elements is the respiratory program. Now we have been prescribed to do masks. Please see the paragraph “Respiration” of the book “What to do if your baby has a brain injury, …”.

4.3. Patterning

At the program we do the so-called copying or patternings (give a link to the article translation).

At first to perform patternings we tried to use sport mats of 100 х 100 х 10 сm. We put on the table one or two mats (one upon the other). However, their surface was not slippery, that’s why we had to use additionally a potato starch. Later on we ordered a tabletop that we covered by polyurethane foam (with thickness of 2-3 cm) and by leather substitute. At the middle of the tabletop we draw a line by a marker. To the inner side of the tabletop a rubber strip is attached. It prevents the tabletop sliding on the table surface.

The Institutes recommend communicating with kid during the patterning. For example, you can tell him poems or sing songs. We’re not very nice in singing, so we switched on the cartoon music. However, it’s recommended to perform patternings at one rate, but the cartoon music has different ones; so, sometimes it was quicker, sometimes lower. We solved the problem by buying a metronome. Now we’re do patternings under its counting.

For patterning 3 adults are necessary, so you can face the problem of finding the 3rd adult. When we lived in the city of Zheleznodorozhnyi (Moscow region) we placed an announcement on our house forum site, as well as on the house entrance doors. Some neighbours helped us. In the city of Tobolsk (Tyumen region, Siberia) a baby-sitter helps us in the mornings and our colleagues help us in the evenings.

4.4. Inclined floor

We ordered an inclined floor two times and each time we wished to get it as soon as possible to start our exercises as soon as possible. We couldn’t find anyone ready to do an inclined floor according to the Institutes’ drawings, that’s why each time inclined floors were different and we tried just to keep general proportions given by the Institutes. Inclined floors were expensive as we ordered them in companies manufacturing kitchens or furniture (under order). We didn’t make any special joints with the floor. However, Kate without any problems crawled to the floor.

4.5. Balance program

We followed the stage 3 of Balance program according to the book «To be physically superb». Kate has spasticity, so when we rotated or were rocking her we hold her by hands and legs as closer to the body as possible. Kate liked very much when we made rocking and horizontal pitching by us. She also adored when we tossing her over the head (in air she moved her legs very actively).

4.6. Child motivation

We use balls, disks, cans – everything that can be rolled, everything that can be used by Kate for playing. We also use Kate’s favourite books that we do by ourselves. As all kids she likes playing games, that’s why we try to build the motivation on a game.

When we make masks sometimes we make them together, for instance, at first we put a mask on dad, then on Kate.
After each successful patterning (when Kate doesn’t cry and fight back) we applaud and praise her. Kate likes any kind of appraisal very much.
During breaks between patternings we do “fingers” (lifting from lying position to sitting position). We do these exercises with big applauses therefore they are usually liked very much.

4.7. Reading cards

To begin with we bought cardboards “Simwhite” of 620х940 mm. However, further we cut them by themselves of the size of 60×15 cm.

To draw words on big cardboards we bought in the Institutes’ shop black and red markers. Usually one marker is enough for 300 words drawn on the cardboards of 60х15 cm. Keeping in mind that in the course of time markers become mop-headed it’s better to buy at least two markers of each color and one bottle of marking ink.

If possible, it’s better to order such cardboards in a printing-office. It’ll save you much time and forces.
